Superstition Trivia
Are You? I'm Not!
The superstition that walking under ladders is bad luck is fairly widespread. In America and Europe, this belief originated around the late 1700s. There are a few theories as to the original thought behind this superstition. The first is that a ladder leaning against a wall forms a triangle--or trinity--with the ground. Walking through this triangle is disrespectful to God and may show your sympathy to the Devil.
Whatever the origin of the superstition, there is a practical reason not to walk under ladders: you might get hit by something falling from above.
Even those of who don’t think we’re superstitious have a reflexive fear of tempting fate. In theirexperiments, Dr. Risen and a colleague, Thomas Gilovich of Cornell, found found that students think that not doing their reading makes them more likely to be called on in class; that trading away a lottery ticket makes that ticket more likely to win; that an applicant to Stanford graduate school is less likely to get in if he goes around wearing a Stanford T-shirt.

Last Post Answers: B: Bing Crosby Like Crosby, Paul and Ford used the now-ubiquitous recording technique known as close miking, where the microphone is less than 6 inches (15 cm) from the singer's mouth. This produces a more-intimate, less-reverberant sound than is heard when a singer is 1 foot (30 cm) or more from the microphone.Netflix is our new sponsor.
