Medusa, one of the three Gorgons, daughter of Phorcys and Ceto. She was the only one of the Gorgons who was subject to mortality. She is celebrated for her personal charms and the beauty of her locks. Medusa and her sisters came into the world with snakes on their heads, instead of hair, with yellow wings and brazen hands. Their bodies were also covered with impenetrable scales, and their very looks had the power of killing or turning to stones..

Perseus cut off her head, and the blood that dropped from the wound produced the innumerable serpents that infest Africa. The head still retained the same petrifying power as before, as it was fatally known in the court of Cepheus

The recorded history of Scotland begins in the 1st century AD, when the Romans invaded Britain. The Romans added southern Britain to their empire as the province Britannia. They were unable, however, to subdue the fierce tribes in the north. To keep these tribes from invading Britannia, Emperor Hadrian had a massive wall built across the island from sea to sea.

The Romans called the land north of the wall Caledonia, and they called the people Picts--from the Latin piclus, meaning "painted"--because they painted their bodies. How cool is that?

    Classical Music Trivia

Things you never knew about Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)

  •

Born to a wheelwright (and occasional harpist) Mathias Haydn, the only artifact he retained all his life was a wheelmaker's hammer used by his father. He kept this in a specially made ornate box.

  •

Haydn's nickname as a child was "Sepperl". Although his full name was Franz Joseph Haydn, he didn't use the name Franz, which is therefore omitted in most texts nowadays. He also never spelled his name Josef.

  •

Haydn was a good friend of Mozart, in whose house the two musicians used to play in string quartets

Which French composer wrote a piece called "The Sea" (or "La Mer" in French)?

    A: Gabriel Faure

    B. Claude Debussy

    C. Darius Milhaud

    D. Pepe LePew

Last Post Answers: It has many parks and trees

Glasgow has more parks and green areas than any other city in Europe. An aerial view shows this clearly. Glasgow Green in the East End covers an area of 129 acres and is owned by the people of Glasgow. It houses the People's Palace museum and the Winter Gardens where you can enjoy the plants while you have lunch.<-->
