  • Nuclear Bomb Trivia

    A chain reaction

My God, what have we done?" - Robert Lewis co-pilot of the Enola Gay

  • On August 2, 1939, just before the beginning of World War II, Albert Einstein wrote to then President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Einstein and several other scientists told Roosevelt of efforts in Nazi Germany to purify uranium-235, which could be used to build an atomic bomb! It was shortly thereafter that the United States Government began the serious undertaking known then only as "The Manhattan Project." Simply put, the Manhattan Project was committed to expediting research that would produce a viable atomic bomb.KaBOOM!

    Holidays Around the World Trivia

    Let's Celebrate!

  • Here's one for example...

Cinco de Mayo is frequently regarded as the Mexican equivalent of the United States 4th of July. This is simply not true. Actually, it is the equivalent of the 5th of May. LOL. Of greater importance is the battle of Cinco de Mayo that occurred in 1862.

Juarez, who had been Zapotec Indian minister of Justice in Juan Alvarez' cabinet in the 1850's, entered Mexico City on January 11, 1861 and promptly expelled the Spanish minister, the papal legate, and members of the episcopate. Additionally, he took steps to enforce the decrees of 1859 disestablishing and disendowing the church. He could not have known at this time that almost a century later, "antidisestablishmentarianism" would become the longest word in the English dictionary.

Although Juarez was recognized by the United States and had received both moral and military aid from the US, there were over $80,000,000 in debts at that time to Europe alone. The Mexican Congress in July 17, 1861 decreed the suspension for 2 years of interest payments on the external national debt, and 3 months later a convention occurred between Great Britain, France, and Spain calling for joint intervention in Mexico.

Booth raised his pistol and shot Lincoln in the head, and the bullet went through his skull and stopped behind his right eye. Booth escaped the theater (although he had a broken leg), but was later found in a tobacco barn in Virginia eight days later. A pistol went off, and no one knows if Booth was killed from a soldier's bullet, or if he committed suicide.

    Pumpkin Trivia

This is a new shorter of Mostly Trivial. We'll still do the standard version.

  • We just want to TRY and get out more shows!

References to pumpkins date back way back. The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." "Pepon" was nasalized by the French into "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion." How 'bout that?

Also Shakespeare referred to the "pumpion" in his Merry Wives of Windsor. American colonists changed "pumpion" into "pumpkin." How did that 'K' get in there? The "pumpkin" is referred to in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater and Cinderella.

Although Merkel's party had begun the campaign with a 21% lead over the main governing party in the opinion polls, the final result was so narrow that it was two months before coalition talks between the two largest parties could be finalised and Merkel confirmed as Germany's new chanceller. She is the first woman and the first citizen of the former East Germany to hold the post.

    World Leaders Trivia

    History is fasinating!

  • Chandrika Kumaratunga was president of Sri Lanka from 1994 to 2005, leaving office in November of that year.

As well as being the first woman to serve as as her country's president she was also the second woman to serve (albeit briefly) as the country's prime minister, the first being her own mother. When she was elected as president, Ms Kumaratunga resigned as prime minister and appointed her mother to serve once more as prime minister.Very Interesting.

After 125 years of Hawaiian-European contact/ conquest, the haole had tried to exercise control over just about everything Hawaiian: their Gods, their culture, their magic, their land and their lives.

    Coral Reefs

    So facinating

  • The whimsical names of corals — bubble, staghorn, starburst, and brain — hint at their spectacular appearance, but not necessarily at their true value. As the largest living structures on the planet, coral reefs are also among the greatest storehouses of biodiversity on Earth.

  • Coral reefs are also one of the most threatened marine systems. Scientists estimate that unless we take immediate action, we could lose up to 70 percent of coral reefs by 2050.

    T.V. Trivia

  • Syndication – this is the terminology rather broadly used to describe secondary programming usages (beyond the original run). It includes secondary runs in the country of first issue, but also international usage. In many cases other companies or TV stations that do the syndication work, in other words to sell the product into the markets they are allowed to sell into by contract from the copyright holders, in most cases the producers. Actors, if they are lucky and have a good contract, can make a TON of dough as well!

    Famous Cities

    Chicago!

  • The Century of Progress fairs of 1933 and 1934 were built on landfill just south of Grant Park. The Great Depression limited the original plans for extensive landfill activity. Yet the New Deal created an opportunity to make other improvements, such as the construction of Lake Shore Drive.

These improvements helped make the lakefront the focal point for citywide celebrations and a core of cultural institutions that now include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, the Adler Planetarium, and the Grant Park Music Festival.

I went to the Art Institute of Chicago, the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. All were fantastic!

An ancient henge encloses enormous orthostats and colossal trilithons of heathen sarsen and shadowy dolerite. "Stonehenge…" you breathe in an awed whisper. "Large rocks stuck in the sod," observes your more prosaic companion, "for no good reason that I can think of. Besides, technically, some would claim Stonehenge isn't even a henge, you know." So, technically, what's a henge? Well, it's a round or oval bank with an interior ditch, of course!

  • Antares is the 16th brightest star in the sky. It is fairly close to us too... only about 600 light years away. (Meaning that its light, traveling at 186,282 miles per second, takes only 600 years to reach us!) To put this 600 light years into perspective... The furthest celestial body visible to the naked eye is the Andromeda Galaxy and its roughly 2,610,000 light years away!

The "particle horizon", the horizon of the visible part of the universe, is 13.2 billion (13,200,000,000) light years away from us. Our sun is only 8.3 light-minutes from earth, imagine that!

    Death in 3's

    Seems to always happen?

  • I have as much authority as the Pope, I just don't have as many people who believe it. - George Carlin

George Carlin had many popular writings on the Internet being falsely attributed to him, such as the anonymous commentaries "I Am a Bad American" and "The Paradox of Our Time," along with several lists of one-liner jokes. Carlin states on his website that he did not write them, and "nothing you see on the Internet is mine unless it came from one of my albums, books, HBO shows, or appeared on my website.

Just before Christmas 2005, he experienced significant shortage of breath and other heart-related symptoms. On Christmas Day he entered Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Beverly Hills. During an eight-day stay he was treated for a lung infection and narrowed arteries. He received antibiotics and an angioplasty that included the placement of a double stent. The procedure was successful, but he was advised to take things slowly in the New Year.

  • As of June 21 2000, the U.S. Space Command counted 8,927 man-made objects in the great above and beyond; some are there more or less permanently. The United States leads the former Soviet Union in the total quantity of orbital junk, but some companies and other organizations contribute significantly to the count.

Also their habitats continue to shrink. Today due to conservation efforts the American alligator is no longer on the endangered species list but many species of crocodiles remain at risk. Magnets.Very attractive!

If they ate spinach would they have more iron?

  • The discovery of the magnetic compass was an event of GREAT importance in the history of people. It was the first documented instrument created by mankind that could be read using a precise scale. Of course the sundial had been around for a long time, but it doesn't move [just it's shadow does as you know]. There was the wind vane, but no precise way at that time to measure wind direction. If you think about it, it's pretty hard to measure direction in general, without a compass. The earliest known compass surfaced in China by at least the first century A.D. It apparently didn't arrive in Europe until the twelfth century A.D [1100's]

    Windmills of my Mind

    So many uses!

  • There are examples of windmills whose sails rotate clockwise, and examples that rotate anticlockwise. The direction is always taken from in front of the mill, and looking at the sails, the solid edge is the leading edge. An example of nearby similar mills whose sails rotate in opposite directions can be seen in Cambridgeshire at Bourn (anticlockwise) and Great Gransden (clockwise).

  • With increasing environmental concern, and approaching limits to fossil fuel consumption, wind power has regained interest as a renewable energy source. It is increasingly becoming more useful and sufficient in providing energy for many areas of the world.
